Sleep Paralysis Type of Night

I can’t really explained how this all happened last night or what triggered it, but it was disturbing enough for me to dust off my blog this morning and write about it. I usually have random issues with sleeping, though this is the first time I’ve ever experienced sleep paralysis and it’s not something I would like to go through again if at all avoidable. Maybe it’s stress from work trying to constantly get things right, thinking about training this new hire, looking for a bigger house, considering selling my condo, planning two trips to the pacific northwest, or something completely unrelated. I’ll never know. Nothing was different yesterday that I can remember. I was at the office all day like usual then went home and played some Assassin’s Creed before hitting the gym. Ate dinner, watched some NBA Summer League basketball and Impractical Jokers then tried to sleep. I couldn’t fall asleep, though that’s not too unusual. That happens to me from time to time and it was already too late to take any sleep aid or NyQuil so I attempted to do some breathing exercises and put on some lavender relaxation lotion. Neither worked immediately and it was almost 2am.

I didn’t look at the clock, but it had to be nearing 2:30am and I started to feel something and it wasn’t “sleepy”. I had my eyes closed with the covered pulled over my face. Suddenly it was like bright bursts of lights flashing inside my head under my eyelids. I could actually feel them happening if that makes sense. I think I finally fell asleep. I mean I must have for this next thing to happen. I woke up suddenly from a dream (which is why I figure that I fell asleep) and couldn’t move. I was lying in bed completely paralyzed. I couldn’t get up. I couldn’t move my arms. I couldn’t kick my legs. I couldn’t talk. I could barely breathe. I was holding JR’s hand and wasn’t able to squeeze to wake her up so that she could shake me or something. When I attempted to scream, nothing could come up. I felt like I was either dying or already dead. I don’t know how long this lasted. Probably seconds, but it felt like hours. Finally, it went away and I jumped up and let out a huge sigh of relief. I read and watched videos about sleep paralysis before so I knew exactly what it was at this point. I forced myself to sleep, which wasn’t easy and I kept worrying that this was going to happen again. Maybe not this morning, but sometime down the line. First thing I did when I got up was look up sleep paralysis and there wasn’t any new useful information. Nothing I can do about it now other than hope it doesn’t happen again. Maybe a bottle of wine before bed will help avoid it. If you’ve gone through sleep paralysis before and have any insight on how to avoid or get through it please hit me up.

Sometimes I have a strange dream where I am in my car parking and moving slowly about to hit something but I can’t stop and I cannot move any parts of my body at all but then I wake up before actually crash.
