It seems like everyone around me is doing something good whether it’s my white parents, Noel and Julie Cruz for their church, or my real parents, Paul and Julie. Even my sister Jean does volunteer work at the Signal Hill Police Station (booooo!) and at the Long Beach Rescue Mission (yay!). So to sum it up, everyone is kicking in except for me. Hell, I don’t even like giving homeless people money when they hit me up at the gas station. Moochers. So a few days ago there was a big flood in my homeland of Taiwan caused by Typhoon Morakot (nobody could come up with a better name I guess). I admit that I haven’t been watching the news lately. Well, I rarely watch it at all in the first place, but I’ve been getting home pretty late the past week so I really haven’t been paying attention.
As of yesterday, the death toll was over 400 from this massive storm. My parents kept talking about doing something to help out so they donated nearly 400 cases of their company line ProText safety gear to the workers in Taiwan who were dealt with the grueling task of doing the clean up work. Early yesterday morning, the Chu’s Packaging Supplies drivers delivered all of these to the China Airlines cargo division. In their efforts to push the Humanity Relief Aid, China Airlines has offered their shipping services for free on donated items to victims of the massive storm and the CPS safety gear was on the very first shipment back to Taiwan.
Later in the morning, the Chinese TV and print newspapers had my parents come down to China Airlines so they could talk about their company and donation. Since I don’t watch the Chinese news on a regular basis, I had no idea who these people were. There were a couple of dudes in suits that I’m guessing were some pretty important people. I mean, they were wearing suits. How could they not be important?
We were there for about an hour and I was tempted to tease my mom to smile or stand up straight like she does whenever I’m doing something, but held back. I need to brush up on my Chinese, because I really couldn’t understand anything they were talking about or asking. This morning, we saw the story in the Chinese World Journal news. If you have a language pack and can read Chinese, hit me back and tell me what it says please. On my computer it just shows up as boxes with numbers in them like it’s some new type of code. Maybe it’s not even new. It could be some old school hieroglyphics.
In any event, if you want to help out the victims in Taiwan please help the people out in my home country. There are tons of charity sites like Global Giving, but maybe check out the Taiwanese American site for more info. Every little bit helps. Just make sure you double check that the whichever organization you donate to isn’t a scam. A lot of those are popping up lately.
