Gearing Up My iPhone 3G

It never seems to fail. Every time I want to give some kind of compliment to my Apple iPhone 3G, something bad happens to it. Very comparable to washing your car and having it rain right after. Though it hasn’t rained in California in a while and that still doesn’t stop these idiots on my street from watering their driveway. Anyhow, with all of the problems I had with my previous iPhones, this last one that Will “Homer” Law and Janel bought me was pretty much flawless. I actually even convinced my sister to get into 2009 and buy a new 3GS phone for herself. Well, it did start blacking out after I dropped onto the heater in my room, but that was more my fault for even having the heater out in July. I ended up just updating the software and didn’t have anymore problems after that. Then just when I was about to write about how much I liked my iPhone again, the silent button fell off. It’s the little shiny button on the side that turns the ringer on and off. Not a huge deal, but rather bothersome if you ask me. Not just because I couldn’t turn the ringer off and on, but because this meant that I had to make an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar. That meant I’d have to go online to book something a couple days in advance at whichever inconvenient location had an opening. Let’s see, Brea, Manhattan Beach, or South Coast Plaza. Hmm. All about 20 plus miles away from my house. I got there an hour early for my 4:45 appointment, and it still took them over an hour to get to me so I spent the whole time people watching and hoping that the tight jeans/bright shirt trend ends before I have kids. When they finally got to me, it went pretty quick. Dude just swapped out my broken phone for a refurbished one. Kind of like the born again virgin of iPhones. The only thing is that they didn’t transfer anything for me, which I didn’t expect them to since I wasn’t a hot chick. So here I have my semi-new phone and needed to make sure nothing happened to it so I got a bunch of stuff from AccessoryGeek.com that includes a hard case, privacy screen protector, and car charger.

I’d really prefer to not have a case on my iPhone at all since it’s so smooth and sleek without one. Kind of like going raw dawg instead of…eh nevermind. It just has a sleek design, OK? But seeing that I dropped my first iPhone like 20 times, I figured it’d be better to get one. This case-mate one just clips onto the back of my phone and almost resembles the phone itself. It’s not too bulky and has cutouts for the camera lens and Apple logo. It keeps the shiny black backing of the iPhone from getting scratched, but I’d like it to have a little more texture so it doesn’t slip out of my pocket when I’m wearing basketball shorts. That little transaction accounts for over half the times I dropped my first phone. Still good to have some protection rather than none.

As for the privacy screen protector, I am constantly wiping down the screen on my phone because it gets greasy from my fingers typing text messages and e-mails all day. Normal screen protectors work, but this one keeps nosy people from looking at what you’re typing or looking at on your phone. Not that I’m looking at anything bad, but I just like my privacy at times. So far this is way better than the mirror screen protector I got before, though I haven’t had a chance to try it out in bright sunlight yet. The mirror one made it near impossible to see the screen if you were outside. This privacy one just seems to add a little bit of tint.

Lastly is the car charger. I’ve always been sketchy about car chargers since some of them ruin your battery and with the iPhone, you can’t just buy a new battery and swap it out. Plus it’s only on rare occasions that my battery actually runs out when I’m not at home. But it’s those times that you need your phone the most that the battery is completely drained. It’s always good to have a car charger as a backup especially if you’re like me and don’t expect to go out all the time. By the time you decide to head out to a club or something, your phone is already at half battery. After a couple of phone calls, text messages, e-mails, and FaceBook status updates your phone will practically be dead. You don’t want a dead phone when you’re trying to get home. Think of trying to find a route home if there is a detour. Trust me, there will be a detour. Or you could just be like my sis and listen to Pandora radio all day. That kills your battery too. And let’s be honest, the iPhone battery isn’t that consistent when it comes to draining so it’s better to have a spare charger than to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a useless phone.

I’m pretty indecisive so I’ll probably get back onto AccessoryGeeks.com and order a bunch of other things for my iPhone. Maybe another regular charger since I always forget to pack mine when I go on trips or an external battery. A couple more cases would be cool also. However, the more cases I have the more difficult of a time I’m going to have deciding on which one to use. Kind of like having all of these basketball shoes. I think Will “CheeseCake” Roegge is going to order some accessories for his new Palm Pre too.
